Lake Misurina

The pearl of Cadore

At 1,754 metres, in the municipality of Auronzo di Cadore, Lake Misurina is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Dolomites, called "the pearl of Cadore". About 2.6 kilometres around, its calm waters reflect the peaks that surround it: the Sorapis, the Cadini di Misurina and, in the distance, the unmistakable profile of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, reached by the road that starts from the lake.

On its shores stands a large building, the Istituto Pio XII, a centre for the treatment of childhood asthma: the air of Misurina, dry, clean and low in allergens, is considered particularly beneficial for respiratory diseases. A flat path, about 2.6 km long, runs all the way around the lake and is perfect for a walk with children. In winter the lake freezes and in the past hosted speed skating races, including those of the 1956 Winter Olympics. Nearby, the small Lago d'Antorno is also worth a visit, with a magnificent view of the Tre Cime. Misurina is the starting point for many hikes, including the one to the Cadini di Misurina viewpoint, now very popular on social media.

Tip: the light is best in the early morning, when the lake is calm and the reflections perfect; in winter the area is good for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
