The Three Peaks of Lavaredo

The three most famous rock towers in the Alps

The Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the Three Peaks of Lavaredo (Drei Zinnen in German), are the symbol of the Dolomites and one of the most famous mountain shapes in the world: three gigantic towers of pale dolomite rock rising side by side on the border between Veneto and South Tyrol, the Cima Grande (2,999 metres), the Cima Ovest and the Cima Piccola. Their sheer north faces, about 500 metres high, are among the great challenges of the history of climbing.

They are surrounded by a high plateau of scree and meadows, and the circuit of the Tre Cime is one of the most popular hikes in the Alps: a ring of about 10 kilometres, mostly easy, which starts from the Rifugio Auronzo, at 2,320 metres, reached by a toll road from Misurina, passes the small chapel of the Alpini and the Rifugio Lavaredo and reaches the Rifugio Locatelli, from which you have the classic view of the north faces, especially beautiful at sunset. The area was on the front line during the First World War, and the remains of trenches and tunnels can still be seen. The peaks are part of the Tre Cime Nature Park.

Tip: in summer the toll road is very busy; arrive early in the morning or use the bus from Misurina. Good shoes and warm clothing are essential even in August.
