The Mugello and Bosco ai Frati

The green valley of the Medici and Michelozzo's convent in the woods

North of Florence, the Mugello is a broad green valley ringed by the Apennines, the land the Medici came from. They filled it with villas and castles, such as Cafaggiolo and Trebbio, and today it is known for its gentle countryside, its lake of Bilancino and the Mugello motor racing circuit.

Hidden in the woods near San Piero a Sieve, the convent of San Bonaventura al Bosco ai Frati is one of the oldest Franciscan settlements in Tuscany, rebuilt by Michelozzo for Cosimo the Elder. Its small museum holds a wooden crucifix attributed to Donatello. The silence of the forest around it makes it one of the most peaceful places in the region.

Tip: taste the tortelli di patate, the Mugello's signature dish, and combine the visit with Scarperia, a village famous for its knife makers and its Palazzo dei Vicari.
