Sicily's largest forest, with lakes, black pigs and wild horses
Between the Madonie and the Peloritani, the Nebrodi mountains form the largest protected area in Sicily, a regional park of beech, oak and holm oak forests, mountain pastures and lakes, rising to about 1,850 metres at Monte Soro. It is a Sicily very different from the one of beaches and baroque towns: green, cool and wild.
In the forests and pastures graze the Sanfratellano horses, a native breed living in the wild, and the Nebrodi black pigs, from which excellent salami are made. The heart of the park is the Lago Biviere di Cesarò, a mountain lake at 1,278 metres surrounded by beech trees, with views of Etna reflected in its water. The Lago Maulazzo and the Lago Trearie are also beautiful. Villages such as Cesarò, San Fratello and Floresta preserve traditions and food.
Tip: taste the provola dei Nebrodi and the salami of black pig; the Dorsale dei Nebrodi path crosses the whole ridge for walkers and cyclists.
