The village of the Beigua woods
In the Ligurian Apennines behind Savona, at about 400 metres, among dense woods of beech, chestnut and oak, Sassello is a charming mountain village, awarded the Orange Flag of the Touring Club, with stone houses, narrow streets, baroque churches and a quiet, green atmosphere, far from the crowds of the coast. The village is part of the Beigua Natural Park, a UNESCO Global Geopark, an area of mountains just a few kilometres from the sea, with rocks of great geological interest, forests and panoramic paths, from which on clear days you can see the coast and even Corsica.
Sassello is famous throughout Italy for its amaretti: soft, round biscuits made with sweet and bitter almonds, sugar and egg whites, with a crisp surface and a moist, tender heart, each wrapped in coloured paper. Their production began in the nineteenth century, and today several local confectioners still make them according to traditional recipes, together with other specialities such as the canestrelli and the "amaretti morbidi" in many flavours. The woods around the village are also rich in mushrooms, especially porcini, and in chestnuts, celebrated in autumn festivals. Near Sassello, the Bosco della Deiva, a large forest with a historic villa, and the Foresta della Deiva offer easy walks, while the paths of the Beigua lead to peaks and small lakes. In the village, the Perrando museum displays archaeological and art collections.
Tip: buy amaretti directly from the historic confectioners of the village; in autumn, look for the mushroom and chestnut festivals.
