The largest archaeological park in Europe, with temples by the sea
Founded in the seventh century BC by Greek colonists from Megara Hyblaea, Selinunte was one of the richest cities of Magna Graecia, until the Carthaginians destroyed it in 409 BC. Its ruins spread over about 270 hectares along the sea, forming one of the largest archaeological parks in Europe.
On the Eastern Hill stand three great temples, identified by letters: Temple E, reconstructed in the 1950s, dedicated to Hera, with its tall Doric columns; Temple F; and the colossal Temple G, one of the largest in the Greek world, now a gigantic heap of fallen blocks. On the acropolis, overlooking the beach, are other temples, the walls, streets and houses. The finest sculpted metopes are in the archaeological museum in Palermo.
Tip: the park is huge: use the electric cars or rent a bicycle; after the visit, swim at the beach of Marinella di Selinunte, right below the acropolis.
