Scopello and its faraglioni

An old tuna fishery and the most photographed sea stacks in Sicily

Scopello, a hamlet of Castellammare del Golfo, is a tiny village grouped around an eighteenth century baglio, a fortified courtyard with a fountain, where the farmers once lived. A short walk downhill leads to one of the most famous views in Sicily.

The Tonnara di Scopello, a tuna fishery active from the thirteenth century until the 1980s, stands on a rocky bay with its old buildings, boats and watchtowers, facing the faraglioni, tall sea stacks rising from crystal-clear water. The tonnara is private and can be visited with a ticket, which also gives access to a small beach for swimming among the rocks. The area has been the set of several films, including Ocean's Twelve.

Tip: Scopello is the southern gateway to the Zingaro reserve; try the pane cunzato in the baglio, and come out of season, as the village is very small.
