Seven kilometres of coast without roads, coves and dwarf palms
In 1980 a protest march stopped the construction of a coastal road between Scopello and San Vito Lo Capo: the following year the area became the Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro, the first nature reserve in Sicily. Today about seven kilometres of wild coast can be explored only on foot.
The main path runs along the cliffs among dwarf palms, carob trees and wild flowers, linking a series of pebble coves with crystal-clear water: Cala Capreria, Cala Berretta, Cala Marinella, Cala del Varo, Cala Tonnarella dell'Uzzo. Small museums of the reserve tell the story of rural life and the old tonnara fishing, and the Grotta dell'Uzzo was inhabited in prehistoric times.
Tip: bring water, sun protection and swimming gear; there are two entrances, south near Scopello and north near San Vito, and walking from one to the other takes about two and a half hours.
