A Caribbean beach under Monte Monaco and a festival of couscous
At the tip of a headland on the north west coast, San Vito Lo Capo is a village of white, low houses and one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy: a long crescent of fine white sand with turquoise water, framed by the rocky profile of Monte Monaco. In the centre stands the sanctuary of San Vito, a fortified church built around a small chapel.
The town's North African soul shows on the table: couscous here is made with fish, prepared by hand in the "mafaradda", a glazed earthenware bowl, and served with a rich fish broth. Every September San Vito hosts the Cous Cous Fest, an international festival where chefs from Italy, Tunisia, Morocco, Senegal and many other countries compete.
Tip: for quieter swimming, head for the coves of the Zingaro reserve or the Riserva di Monte Cofano, a short drive away; climbing in the area is also renowned.
