The most beautiful hike on the Amalfi Coast
The Sentiero degli Dei, the "Path of the Gods", is one of the most famous walks in Italy and deserves its name: for about 7 kilometres it runs high along the Lattari Mountains, hundreds of metres above the sea, with endless views over the Amalfi Coast, from Praiano and Positano to the island of Capri on the horizon.
The classic route starts at Bomerano, a hamlet of Agerola, at about 650 metres, and ends at Nocelle, a tiny village above Positano. It is mostly flat or downhill, among terraces of vineyards and lemon groves, caves, cliffs and Mediterranean scrub, with goats grazing along the way. From Nocelle you can descend to Positano along a staircase of about 1,700 steps, or take a local bus. The name probably comes from the legend that the Greek gods used this path to reach the sea to save Ulysses from the sirens.
Tip: walk from Agerola towards Positano so you have the view in front of you; avoid the hottest hours in summer and bring plenty of water. It takes about three hours.
