The Fjord of Furore

A hidden beach beneath a bridge in a fjord

Furore is known as the "village that does not exist": its houses are scattered along the slopes of the Lattari mountains, without a real centre. Its most famous corner is the Fiordo di Furore, a deep, narrow gorge carved by the Schiato stream that opens onto the sea between sheer rock walls, like a small Norwegian fjord transported to the Mediterranean.

At the bottom of the gorge is a tiny beach of pebbles, reached by a staircase from the coast road, and a cluster of old fishermen's houses, the "monazzeni", once used to store tools and now partly converted into a small eco-museum. Above, the gorge is spanned by the arch of the coast road bridge, 30 metres high: from here, from 1987 until recently, the international high diving championships were held, with athletes plunging into the sea below. The village was also the setting of the love story between the actress Anna Magnani and the director Roberto Rossellini, who filmed here.

Tip: the beach is small and fills quickly; parking is very limited, so arrive by the SITA bus. Furore produces excellent wines from terraces over the sea.
