The castle and the white wine
East of Verona, at the foot of the Lessini hills, Soave is a perfectly preserved medieval village, enclosed by crenellated walls with 24 towers that climb the hill to the Scaliger Castle. Rebuilt by the della Scala family in the fourteenth century on an earlier fortress, the castle has three courtyards, a keep and furnished rooms that recreate life in a medieval castle, with views over the vineyards. Soave is one of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia".
The village gives its name to one of the most famous Italian white wines, the Soave, made mainly from the Garganega grape grown on the volcanic and limestone hills around it, a landscape of vineyards trained on the traditional "pergola veronese". The best versions come from the historic area, the Soave Classico, and the Recioto di Soave, sweet, made from dried grapes, was the first DOCG of the Veneto in 1998. In 2018 the vineyards of Soave were recognised by the FAO as a "Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System". Inside the walls, the Palazzo di Giustizia and the Palazzo dei Conti Cavalli overlook the main street.
Tip: in May the Medieval Festival and in September the Grape Festival animate the village; the wineries in the hills offer tastings.
