Trevi and olive oil

The city of extra virgin olive oil

On a steep hill on the eastern side of the Valle Umbra, between Foligno and Spoleto, Trevi is a small medieval town of pink stone, one of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia", whose houses climb in a spiral to the top of Monte Serano, surrounded by a silvery sea of olive trees. The town is considered the capital of Umbrian extra virgin olive oil: the hills around it are part of the "Fascia Olivata Assisi-Spoleto", the olive belt between Assisi and Spoleto, a strip of hills covered with terraced olive groves, recognised by the FAO in 2018 as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System for its traditional landscape. The oil of this area, mainly from the Moraiolo variety, is intense, fruity, bitter and spicy, among the best in Italy, protected by the Umbria DOP.

In autumn, between late October and December, the olive harvest and the pressing in the frantoi, the oil mills, are a moment of celebration, with the tasting of fresh oil on toasted bread, the bruschetta, and the festival "Festivol" in Trevi. The former convent of San Francesco houses the town's museums, including the Museum of Olive Oil Civilisation, which tells the history of olive growing and oil production in Umbria, and a picture gallery with works by Pinturicchio and lo Spagna. Below the town, the church of the Madonna delle Lacrime preserves a Perugino fresco. A beautiful walking path, the Sentiero degli Ulivi, crosses the olive groves between Assisi and Spoleto, passing through Trevi, with views of the valley. Trevi is also known for the black celery, the "sedano nero di Trevi", a Slow Food presidium.

Tip: in November, visit a frantoio to see the oil being made; walk a stretch of the Sentiero degli Ulivi.
