Two great Romanesque churches standing alone in the countryside
Tuscania, an Etruscan town in the countryside of northern Lazio, enclosed by medieval walls and towers, is famous above all for two extraordinary Romanesque churches that stand outside the centre, on the hill of San Pietro and in the valley below, among fields and olive groves.
The basilica of San Pietro, on the site of the ancient acropolis, has a façade with a rose window surrounded by symbols of the evangelists and strange carved figures, and a crypt with a forest of columns of different origins. The church of Santa Maria Maggiore has a splendid portal and, inside, a large fresco of the Last Judgement. In the town, the National Archaeological Museum displays the terracotta sarcophagi of the Curunas family, and the Etruscan necropolises surround the hills.
Tip: the view of San Pietro from the road, with its towers and the open countryside, is unforgettable at sunset; Tuscania was the setting of several films by Pasolini and others.
