An Etruscan city, a humpback bridge and a lake under a waterfall
In the Maremma of Lazio, near Montalto di Castro and Canino, the Vulci Park combines archaeology and nature. Vulci was one of the twelve great cities of Etruria, rich and powerful, whose necropolises yielded thousands of painted Greek vases in the nineteenth century, today in museums around the world.
The park includes the ruins of the city, with its Roman main street, temples and the Domus del Criptoportico, and the necropolises, including the François Tomb, whose paintings are now in Rome. On the Fiora river, the spectacular Ponte dell'Abbadia, a humpback bridge of Etruscan-Roman origin over a deep gorge, is guarded by a medieval castle that houses the archaeological museum. Below the bridge, the Laghetto del Pellicone, a pool of emerald water under a small waterfall, was the set of several films and is a beloved natural swimming spot.
Tip: the park has marked paths and offers guided tours of the necropolis; swimming in the Pellicone is allowed in summer.
