The medieval tower with holm oaks growing on top
Medieval Lucca bristled with towers, symbols of the power of its merchant families. Among the few that survive, the Torre Guinigi, 45 metres high, is unmistakable: on its summit grows a small garden of holm oaks, planted by the Guinigi family, lords of Lucca in the fifteenth century, perhaps as a symbol of rebirth.
The climb of about 230 steps, partly inside the family palace, ends in the shade of the trees, with a 360 degree view over the red roofs, the oval of the amphitheatre square, the churches and the green ring of the walls, with the Apuan Alps and the Pisan hills on the horizon.
Tip: a combined ticket includes the nearby Torre delle Ore, the clock tower on Via Fillungo, whose mechanism still strikes the hours.
