A hermitage and a monastery in the heart of the ancient forests
In 1012 St Romuald founded in the forests of the Casentino a hermitage that would become the mother house of the Camaldolese order, which combines the life of the hermit with that of the community. The site lies at about 1,100 metres, surrounded by the fir woods that the monks planted and tended for centuries.
The Sacred Hermitage consists of a church and twenty small houses, the cells, each with its own garden, where the monks live in silence. Three kilometres lower down, the Monastery of Camaldoli welcomes visitors and guests. Its ancient pharmacy, dating from the sixteenth century, with wooden shelves, jars and alembics, still sells herbal remedies, liqueurs and soaps made by the monks.
Tip: the path between the monastery and the hermitage crosses one of the most beautiful forests in Italy, part of the Foreste Casentinesi National Park.
