One of the oldest forests in Europe, between Tuscany and Romagna
Straddling the Apennine ridge between Tuscany and Romagna, the Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park protects some of the most ancient and best preserved forests in Europe. The Sasso Fratino reserve, a beech forest that has been left untouched for centuries, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The park is home to deer, wolves, wild boar and eagles, and in autumn the forests of beech, fir and maple turn every shade of red and gold. On Monte Falterona rises the Arno, the river of Florence. The visitor centre at Pratovecchio Stia and the villages of the valley are the starting points for trails, including those leading to Camaldoli and La Verna.
Tip: in September and October listen for the bellowing of the red deer in the rut, one of the great natural spectacles of the Apennines; the source of the Arno is a pleasant walk from Castagno d'Andrea.
