A wild volcanic island of trails, cliffs and clear water
Two and a half hours by ferry from Livorno, Capraia is the most remote and untamed island of the Tuscan Archipelago: a volcanic island with a single paved road, a small village and a harbour, surrounded by red and dark cliffs that drop into some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean. Until 1986 much of the island was a penal colony, which preserved it from development.
Most of the island is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park and can be explored only on foot along trails leading to the small mountain lake of the Stagnone, to the old watchtowers and the abandoned farms of the penal colony. By boat you can go around the island to the Cala Rossa, a volcanic crater eroded by the sea with red walls.
Tip: Capraia has no sandy beaches, only rocks and small coves; it is perfect for diving and snorkelling. Book accommodation early, as there are few places to stay.
