The Nardis Waterfalls

The waterfalls of the Val Genova

Near Carisolo and Strembo, in the Val Rendena, a valley opens towards the west, climbing into the heart of the Adamello-Presanella massif: the Val Genova, one of the most beautiful and wild valleys of the Alps, inside the Adamello Brenta Natural Park, known as the "valley of waterfalls". Carved by ancient glaciers, it is about 17 kilometres long, with granite walls, dense forests of spruce and larch, alpine pastures and huts, and it is crossed by the river Sarca, which receives the waters of dozens of streams that fall from the glaciers above, forming a series of spectacular waterfalls.

The most famous, near the entrance of the valley, is the Cascata di Nardis, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Alps: the water, which descends from the glaciers of the Presanella, falls in a double jump of about 130 metres over a granite wall, forming a white veil that thunders into the woods and creates clouds of spray and rainbows on sunny days. It is easily reachable by car or shuttle bus, with a viewpoint and a refreshment point at its foot, and it is at its most impressive in late spring and early summer, when the snow melts. Further up the valley, other waterfalls follow, such as those of Lares, and the path ends near the Bédole hut, the starting point for hikes towards the Adamello glaciers. In winter, the frozen Nardis waterfall becomes a giant ice sculpture.

Tip: in summer the road is closed to private cars at certain times and a shuttle bus runs; walk the "Sentiero delle Cascate" to see several waterfalls.
