Madonna di Campiglio and the Brenta Dolomites
The Brenta peaks and the Five Lakes Tour
In the upper Val Rendena, at about 1,500 metres, between the Brenta Dolomites to the east and the glaciers of the Adamello-Presanella to the west, Madonna di Campiglio is one of the most elegant and famous mountain resorts in the Alps. A hospice for pilgrims in the Middle Ages, it became fashionable in the late nineteenth century among the aristocracy of the Habsburg Empire, when the Empress Elisabeth, known as Sissi, and Emperor Franz Joseph stayed there; the memory of this period lives on in the Habsburg Carnival, held every winter with parades in period costume. Today it is one of the most important ski areas in Italy, with over 150 kilometres of slopes, and hosts a World Cup slalom on the famous Canalone Miramonti.
The Brenta Dolomites, part of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage Site, are a group of spectacular peaks, towers and pinnacles of pale rock, isolated west of the Adige, crossed by the famous Via delle Bocchette, one of the most beautiful via ferrata routes in the Alps. In summer, Campiglio is the starting point for countless hikes. The most popular is the Giro dei Cinque Laghi, the Five Lakes Tour: from the arrival of the Cinque Laghi cable car, a path of about three to four hours connects five small alpine lakes, Ritorto, Lambin, Serodoli, Gelato and Nambino, set among larches, meadows and granite rocks, with views of the Brenta. Another classic is the walk to the Vallesinella waterfalls and the Brentei refuge.
Tip: in summer the cable cars have combined passes; start the Five Lakes Tour early to enjoy the reflections on the water.
