The village of Pinocchio's author and the baroque Garzoni Garden
The little village of Collodi, a hamlet of Pescia, lent its name to Carlo Lorenzini, who signed "The Adventures of Pinocchio" as Collodi; his mother came from here and he spent part of his childhood in the village. Since 1956 the Parco di Pinocchio has celebrated the wooden puppet with sculptures, mosaics and installations among the trees: the Great Shark, the Field of Miracles, Geppetto's workshop and the Fairy's house.
Next to it rises the Garzoni Garden, one of the most spectacular baroque gardens in Italy, climbing a hillside in terraces and stairways decorated with statues, fountains, flowerbeds shaped like coats of arms and a maze, up to the green theatre. The adjoining Butterfly House is a tropical greenhouse with hundreds of free-flying butterflies.
Tip: a single ticket covers the Pinocchio Park, the Garzoni Garden and the Butterfly House; the old village of Collodi Castello, stacked on the hill behind the villa, is worth a walk.
