Liberty-style spa palaces and a funicular to the medieval village
Montecatini Terme is one of the most famous spa towns in Europe. In the early twentieth century, kings, composers and film stars came here to "take the waters": Verdi, Puccini, Grace Kelly. The town grew around a grand park, with spa buildings in neoclassical and Liberty style that are a monument in themselves; since 2021 it has been part of the UNESCO site of the Great Spa Towns of Europe.
The most spectacular, the Tettuccio, has colonnades, frescoes and marble counters where the mineral waters are served, accompanied in the past by an orchestra. A historic red funicular, in operation since 1898, climbs up to Montecatini Alto, a medieval village with a small square full of cafés and views over the Valdinievole.
Tip: taste the cialde di Montecatini, thin wafers filled with almonds, sold in the historic pastry shops of the town.
