Niki de Saint Phalle's giant mosaic sculptures in the Maremma hills
In the hills near Capalbio, the French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle spent almost twenty years, from 1979, building her life's dream: a garden of monumental sculptures inspired by the 22 major arcana of the tarot, inspired by Gaudí's Park Güell in Barcelona and the Monster Park of Bomarzo.
The figures, some of them so large that they can be entered and lived in, such as the Empress in which the artist lived for years, are covered with mirrors, glass and colourful ceramic mosaics that sparkle in the Tuscan sun: the Magician, the High Priestess, the Wheel of Fortune, the Tower, Death on horseback. The garden opened to the public in 1998.
Tip: the garden is open only from spring to mid-October; there are no labels, so take the free map to identify the arcana. Combine it with Capalbio and the beaches of the Feniglia.
