The Saturnia hot springs

Free waterfalls of warm sulphurous water among the fields

Near the village of Saturnia, in the municipality of Manciano, the hot spring water, at 37.5°C, flows out of the ground and runs over a series of white limestone terraces near an old mill, forming the Cascate del Mulino: natural pools of warm turquoise water where you can bathe for free, day and night, all year round.

According to legend, the springs were born when Jupiter, irritated by men's constant wars, hurled a thunderbolt that struck the earth here. The water, rich in sulphur and minerals, has been used since Etruscan and Roman times. Upstream, at the source, a large spa resort offers pools, treatments and a golf course.

Tip: come at dawn or after dark to avoid the crowds, especially at weekends; remove silver jewellery, which the sulphur turns black, and wear water shoes.
