A restored medieval village above a lake on the border with Umbria
On a rocky hill on the border between Lazio and Umbria, Labro is one of the best preserved medieval villages in the Rieti area. Almost abandoned in the twentieth century, it was saved from the 1960s thanks to a Belgian architect and his community, who restored its stone houses, lanes and arches while respecting the original style. It is one of the "Borghi più belli d'Italia".
From its streets and from the castle of the Nobili-Vitelleschi family the view sweeps over Lake Piediluco, a mountain lake surrounded by woods, which lies just across the border in Umbria. The lake is famous for its echo, which repeats words from the slopes of Monte Caperno, and for its rowing centre, where national teams train. Not far away, the Marmore Falls complete the visit.
Tip: walk the panoramic path around Labro at sunset; the castle hosts exhibitions and events in summer.
