Monte Terminillo

The mountain of Rome, for skiing and hiking in the Apennines

At a little over 2,200 metres, Monte Terminillo, in the Reatini mountains, is known as the "mountain of Rome": since the 1930s it has been the closest ski area to the capital, about an hour and a half away. The resort of Pian de' Valli, with its hotels and lifts, was developed in the Fascist era.

In winter the slopes and the cross-country ski trails attract Romans at weekends; in summer the mountain offers walks among beech woods and high pastures, with views as far as the Gran Sasso and, on clear days, the Tyrrhenian Sea. The ascent to the summit, along marked paths, is a classic for Apennine hikers. The nearby village of Leonessa, in a high valley, has a fine medieval centre and is known for its potatoes.

Tip: in summer the Terminillo is an escape from the heat of Rome; the chairlifts often run at weekends to make the climb easier.
