National Archaeological Museum of Naples
The treasures of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the Secret Cabinet and the Farnese collection
The National Archaeological Museum of Naples is one of the most important in the world for Greek and Roman antiquity. Housed in a vast sixteenth century building, it holds most of the finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum: frescoes removed from the walls of the villas, mosaics, bronzes, furniture and everyday objects. Its most famous piece is the Alexander Mosaic from the House of the Faun, showing the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius.
The museum also displays the Farnese collection of sculptures, with giants such as the Farnese Bull, the largest single sculpture surviving from antiquity, and the Farnese Hercules. The Secret Cabinet gathers the erotic art of Pompeii, once hidden from the public. There are also the Egyptian collection, the coins and the beautiful model of Pompeii in cork.
Tip: allow at least half a day; visit the museum before going to Pompeii to understand what you will see in the excavations.
