Toledo and the other stations designed by great architects
Since the early 2000s Naples has turned its underground into a widespread museum: the Stazioni dell'Arte, the "Art Stations" of Line 1 and Line 6, were designed by famous architects and decorated with works by contemporary artists, with around two hundred works in all.
The most celebrated is the Toledo station, designed by the Spanish architect Óscar Tusquets Blanca, repeatedly voted among the most beautiful in Europe. Descending the escalators you enter a deep blue world of mosaics that evokes the sea, culminating in the "Crater de luz", a conical shaft that rises from the platforms to the surface, filling the station with light. Other stations worth seeing are Università, by Karim Rashid, with its pop colours and digital profiles; Garibaldi, by Dominique Perrault; Municipio, which displays the remains of the ancient harbour found during excavation; and Dante and Museo, with works by Kounellis and others.
Tip: a single metro ticket is enough for a tour; get off at Toledo, Università and Municipio, and look at the station without hurry between trains.
