The smallest and most fashionable of the Aeolian Islands
Panarea is the smallest of the inhabited Aeolian Islands, a few square kilometres of white houses with blue shutters, bougainvillea and narrow lanes where only electric carts and scooters circulate. Since the 1960s it has been the most fashionable island of the archipelago, loved by artists and celebrities, with lively nightlife in summer.
Beyond the chic image, the island has beautiful nature. On the Capo Milazzese headland lie the remains of a Bronze Age village of 23 oval huts, overlooking the splendid bay of Cala Junco, with its transparent water and smooth rocks. The islets around Panarea, such as Basiluzzo, Lisca Bianca and Dattilo, are excellent for swimming and diving, and at Bottaro gas bubbles rise from the seabed, a sign of the volcano below.
Tip: visit in June or September to avoid the August crowds; from Panarea the evening boats to see Stromboli's eruptions take less than an hour.
