The green island of the Aeolians, of malvasia, capers and Il Postino
Salina, the second largest of the Aeolian Islands, is also the greenest: it is formed by two extinct volcanoes, Monte dei Porri and Monte Fossa delle Felci, the highest peak in the archipelago at 962 metres, covered with ferns, chestnuts and pines, part of a nature reserve.
The island is famous for its Malvasia delle Lipari, a sweet amber wine made from sun-dried grapes, and for its capers, grown on terraces and preserved in salt. Its villages, Santa Marina, Malfa and Leni, are quiet and elegant. At Pollara, a crescent of rocks at the foot of an ancient half-collapsed crater, Massimo Troisi filmed Il Postino in 1994. At Lingua, the salt lake that gives the island its name sits beside the sea.
Tip: taste the pane cunzato and the granita at Lingua; the walk to the top of Fossa delle Felci, about two hours, offers a view of all seven islands.
