The green heart of Irpinia
Avellino lies in a basin surrounded by the mountains of Irpinia, the green and wine-rich interior of Campania, far from the crowds of the coast. Rebuilt after the 1980 earthquake, it is the gateway to some of the finest wines of southern Italy.
What to see
The Clock Tower and the Bourbon Carcere Borbonico, now a cultural centre, recall the old town. The cathedral, the Irpino Museum and the ruins of the Lombard castle complete the centre. Just above the city, the Sanctuary of Montevergine, reached by cable car from Mercogliano, is one of the most visited in southern Italy, at almost 1,300 metres.
