One of the most beautiful beaches in the world, at the southern tip of Italy
Lampedusa, the largest of the Pelagie Islands, is closer to Africa than to Sicily: it is the southernmost point of Italy. It is a flat, rocky island of limestone, with an arid interior and a coast of coves with extraordinarily transparent water.
Its most famous beach, the Spiaggia dei Conigli (Rabbit Beach), is a small bay of white sand facing the islet of the same name, part of a nature reserve. It is one of the few places in Italy where loggerhead sea turtles lay their eggs, and from June to October access is regulated to protect the nests. Other beautiful spots are Cala Pulcino, Tabaccara and Cala Croce. The island is also known for the reception of migrants, remembered by the Porta d'Europa, a monument by Mimmo Paladino.
Tip: in summer visit the Rabbit Beach early in the morning, as entry is limited; the boat tour around the island is the best way to see the coves and grottoes.
