A volcanic island of black lava and pastel-coloured houses
Fifty kilometres north of Lampedusa, Linosa is a small volcanic island, the emerged tip of an ancient volcano, with three extinct craters, black lava fields and red earth. Its only village has houses painted in bright pastel colours, pink, yellow, green and blue, with decorated window frames, in contrast with the dark rock.
There are no sandy beaches, but the natural pools among the lava rocks, such as the Piscine at Punta Calcarella and the Pozzolana di Ponente, a black sand beach, offer swimming in deep blue water. Like Lampedusa, Linosa is a nesting site for loggerhead turtles, and the turtle rescue centre can be visited. Trails lead to the craters of Monte Vulcano and Monte Rosso, with views over the whole island.
Tip: Linosa is reached by ferry or hydrofoil from Lampedusa or Porto Empedocle; it is perfect for those who want silence, walks and snorkelling.
