The hill town where the genius was born, among olive groves
Leonardo da Vinci was born on 15 April 1452 in the countryside of this little town on the slopes of Montalbano, between Florence and Pistoia. The surname by which the world knows him is simply the name of his village.
The Museo Leonardiano, spread between the medieval castle of the Conti Guidi and the Palazzina Uzielli, displays over sixty models of his machines and inventions, built from his drawings: flying machines, war devices, cranes and mechanical instruments, with digital reconstructions of his codices. About three kilometres away, in the hamlet of Anchiano, the stone farmhouse traditionally held to be his birthplace stands among olive trees.
Tip: walk to Anchiano along the "Strada Verde", a path through olive groves; in the church of Santa Croce you can see the font where Leonardo is said to have been baptised.
