A swaying footbridge 36 metres above the Lima river
In the Pistoia mountains, near the village of Mammiano Basso in the municipality of San Marcello Piteglio, the Ponte Sospeso delle Ferriere crosses the Lima river with a span of 227 metres, 36 metres above the water. Built in 1923 to allow the workers of the nearby ironworks to reach the factory quickly, it held the record as the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the world for decades.
Crossing it is an experience: the narrow walkway sways slightly with every step, while the green valley and the river open up below. The bridge is part of a network of trails in the woods of the Pistoia Apennines, which in winter host the ski slopes of Abetone.
Tip: the bridge is open from spring to autumn, with a small fee; children must be accompanied, and those suffering from vertigo should think twice. Nearby, the Ecomuseo della Montagna Pistoiese tells the story of the ironworks and ice houses.
