Wild beaches, pine forests and the butteri, the cowboys of Tuscany
Between Principina a Mare and Talamone, the Parco Regionale della Maremma protects twenty kilometres of coast without a single building: pine forests, Mediterranean scrub, marshes at the mouth of the Ombrone and the limestone hills of the Monti dell'Uccellina, dotted with medieval watchtowers and the ruins of the abbey of San Rabano.
The park is home to wild boar, deer, porcupines and the long-horned Maremma cattle and horses, herded on horseback by the butteri, the Tuscan cowboys. The visitor centre at Alberese is the starting point for marked trails, guided tours on horseback or by canoe, and the bus that takes you to the wild beach of Collelungo, with its driftwood and dunes.
Tip: in summer some trails are accessible only with a guide because of fire risk; on certain days you can watch the butteri at work with the herds.
