A hill town on the Via Francigena and the white truffle of the Pisan hills
San Miniato stretches along three hills halfway between Florence and Pisa, dominated by the Rocca built by Emperor Frederick II, from whose tower the view sweeps over the whole Arno valley. The town was an important stop on the Via Francigena, and its cathedral, convents and palaces recall centuries of power.
The town is famous for its white truffle, which grows in the woods around the hills: some of the largest truffles ever found came from here. In November, on three weekends, the Mostra Mercato Nazionale del Tartufo Bianco fills the streets with stalls, restaurants and tastings.
Tip: in the truffle season, local truffle hunters take visitors out into the woods with their dogs for a hunt, followed by a meal of tagliolini or eggs with shaved truffle.
