Granite, clear water and a medieval village on top of the island
An hour by ferry from Porto Santo Stefano, Isola del Giglio is the second largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago: a mountain of granite covered with scrub, vineyards and wild flowers, with some of the clearest water in the Tyrrhenian.
The island has three villages. Giglio Porto, with its colourful houses around the harbour; Giglio Castello, a fortified medieval village at the top of the island, with narrow lanes, arches and stone stairways, enclosed by walls and towers; and Giglio Campese, on the west coast, with the island's largest beach and the Medici tower. The seabed, part of the national park, is a paradise for divers.
Tip: taste the Ansonaco, an amber white wine from the terraced vineyards, and the panficato, a cake of dried fruit; in summer book the car ferry well in advance or leave the car on the mainland.
